Philadelphia Catholic Liturgy Program (Online Courses)
The Liturgical Institute at Mundelein Seminary (at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake) has made available to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia a special bundle of their on-line courses at a most reasonable rate. These courses provide foundational information on the Sacred Liturgy for clergy and the lay faithful. The summer may be an ideal time for many to take advantage of the opportunity to take these on-line courses. They are excellent refresher courses as well as new learning opportunities for liturgical ministers and catechists.

Join Collegium Institute and Dappled Things for this seminar exploring Claude McKay's posthumously published novel, Romance in Marseille. Written by one of the most important writers of the Harlem Renaissance more than a decade before he converted to Catholicism, Romance in Marseille offers readers the opportunity to consider the ways McKay’s early work about diasporic suffering and injustice relates to his later faith-inspired writing on those same topics, and to think about how both might fit into the broader corpus of Catholic literature. This seminar will be led by Chiyuma Elliott (UC Berkeley) and Terence Sweeney (Collegium Institute), with each of the three sessions featuring a distinguished special guest facilitator.

The onset of the coronavirus pandemic has caused great disruption in the liturgical life of the Church. Although many churches throughout the world have now resumed in-person liturgies, many of the faithful have yet to return, which begs the question, will they ever come back? To have any hope of recovering from the ecclesial devastation wrought by the pandemic, leaders in the Church must grapple with questions of disaffiliation and affiliation, asking not only what might prompt someone to leave the Church, but also—and perhaps more importantly—what might encourage them to stay. Over six weeks this summer, we will examine these questions and more. Together, we will rediscover the riches of the Church’s Tradition in order to propose them in new and beautiful ways to the disaffiliated and the affiliated alike.

Event: High School Workshop on "Catholicism and the Common Good"
Join the Collegium Institute for our first summer seminar of the Young Catholic Leaders Initiative for advanced high school students, made possible by a generous grant from the Connelly Foundation. Over the course of three days, we will focus on one of the 'three necessary societies' stipulated by Catholic Social Teaching, namely, the family, the state, and the Church. Through a combination of keynote lectures and seminars with Penn faculty, panel discussions and city tours with experts in local history, we will explore the principles undergirding Catholic thought on the common good by engaging with thinkers ranging from Augustine and Aquinas to Weil and Wojtyla, as well as seeking to apply those principles to our contemporary American context. The final application deadline is Friday, May 28 at 11:59pm.

Event: A Common Good Worth Living For: A Lecture by Archbishop Charles Chaput
Charles J. Chaput, Archbishop Emeritus of Philadelphia, reflects on the common good as the highest good in light of his recent book Things Worth Dying For: Thoughts on a Life Worth Living. In this book, he “examines the chronic questions of the human heart; the idols and false flags we create; and the nature of a life of authentic faith. He points to our longing to live and die with meaning as the key to our search for God, our loyalty to nation and kin, our conduct in war, and our service to others” In this evening lecture, the Archbishop deepens his description of things that are worth dying for by describing the centrality of the common good for a life worth living. Recentering our life on the common good beyond our private desires is ultimately the only path forward for us as persons in community.
